CROSS
COUNTRY SKIING
You really can
Cross-country ski on Beech Mountain. Known for its slopes where thousands
of downhill ski types and snow boarders gather each winter.
Cross-country
skiers can also enjoy their sport on Beech when natural snow falls are
sufficient to cover the trails. Always check out the area you plan to ski
on before breaking out your skies.
We
suggest the Westerly Hills Area as a first choice, followed by Wild Iris
Loop, Red Fox/Arrowood and Smoketree trails.
Other
favorite cross-country spots in the area include Roan Mountain State Park
which is just 40 minutes away. The Bass Lake Area on the Blue Ridge
Parkway (accessible from US 221, just outside Blowing Rock) is also worth
a try. Other portions of the Parkway can be used when heavy snows close to
the road to be closed to traffic.
Wherever
you decide to try, always exercise caution. Proper clothing and equipment
is necessary. Remember to use layering so you can take off or put on as
you need.
Make sure
you bring your own equipment, as cross-country skies rentals are not
available on Beech Mountain. |
